Check Your AI Search Readiness

Why readiness comes first

AI Assistants Recommend What They Can Verify

More and more buying journeys now start with a question to an AI assistant: who is the best estate planning attorney in Vero Beach, which roofing company in Port St. Lucie has good reviews, what does a dental implant cost in Palm Beach. The assistant answers with a short list of businesses and, usually, links to its sources. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on its index and show links to supporting pages, and assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity use their own crawlers to find and cite sites.

Before any of that can happen for your business, three things have to be true. The assistant’s crawlers must be allowed to fetch your pages. Your pages must state clearly, in plain text, what you do, where and for whom. And the assistant must be able to confirm that your business is a real, specific entity, which it does by cross-checking structured data, knowledge graphs, directories and other sites. This checker measures all three.

We call it readiness, not visibility, on purpose. The free check does not send prompts to AI assistants, so it cannot tell you how often you are mentioned today. It tells you whether anything is stopping you from being mentioned, and what to fix, which is where every AI search optimization engagement starts.

What the AI Search Readiness Check Measures

The AI readiness pillar is scored from these checks. The entity and schema checks that follow it in your results feed the same decision: whether an assistant can confidently identify your business.

CheckWeightWhat we look atWhy AI assistants care
Known entity in Wikidata15Whether a Wikidata item lists your domain as its official websiteWikidata feeds the knowledge graphs that search engines and assistants use to tell one business from another.
AI crawlers allowed12Your robots.txt rules for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, CCBot and Applebot-ExtendedAn assistant cannot cite a page its crawler is told not to read. See OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity crawler documentation.
Wikipedia presence10Wikipedia articles that link to your site, or an article about youWikipedia is one of the reference sources assistants draw on most.
FAQ content with FAQPage schema10Question headings on the homepage and FAQPage structured dataAssistants answer questions; pages that state questions and direct answers are easy to quote.
Crawlable text depth8Words of real text in the homepage HTMLContent that only appears after JavaScript runs may never be seen by crawlers that do not render pages.
Profiles AI engines cross-check8Links to LinkedIn, Yelp, BBB, Clutch, Facebook and similar profilesIndependent profiles let an assistant confirm your name, location and category.
llms.txt guide3A plain-text llms.txt file at your site rootA proposed standard that summarizes a site for language models. Low weight: support is still emerging.

Sampled inner pages add further checks to the AI pillar, such as answer-first openings, question-format headings, extractable lists and tables, and citations to authoritative sources. Checks the scan cannot measure are skipped, never guessed.

Three layers of AI readiness

Access, Understanding and Trust

Every failed check in your results belongs to one of three layers. Fix them in this order.

Layer 1

Access

Can AI crawlers fetch your pages at all? Check robots.txt rules and firewall settings first: a CDN setting that blocks AI bots can remove you from answers even when robots.txt allows them. The free AI Crawler Checker tests both.

Layer 2

Understanding

Once a crawler arrives, can it read what you do? Plain-text service descriptions, clear headings, FAQs with direct answers, and pages that do not depend on JavaScript to show their content all make your expertise easy to extract and quote.

Layer 3

Trust

Can the assistant confirm you are a real, specific business? Organization or LocalBusiness schema, a Wikidata entity, consistent profiles, a linked Google Business Profile and genuine reviews give it independent evidence.

GEO and AEO

How AI Search Readiness Relates to GEO and AEO

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of earning mentions and citations in AI-generated answers. The term comes from a 2023 research paper, GEO: Generative Engine Optimization, which tested how different content changes affected the visibility of sources in generated responses and found that adding citations, quotations and statistics could help. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the closely related work of structuring content so it can be lifted directly into answers, featured snippets and voice responses.

Both depend on the readiness this checker measures. If crawlers are blocked, no content change will help. If your business cannot be identified as an entity, assistants may describe your category without naming you. And if your pages bury the answer under marketing copy, a competitor’s clearer page will be quoted instead.

SEOMA’s GEO services and answer engine optimization build on a clean readiness result: we test real prompts across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude and Google’s AI features, find which sources the assistants trust for your category, and earn your place in them.

From score to citations

How to Raise Your AI Search Readiness

Most sites can lift their AI readiness pillar substantially within a few weeks by working through the failed checks in this order.

01

Open the Door to Search Crawlers

Allow the crawlers that put you in answers, such as OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, in robots.txt and in your firewall or CDN. Training crawlers like GPTBot are a separate business decision.

02

Say What You Do in Plain Text

Make sure your homepage and service pages describe your services, locations and customers in real HTML text, with clear headings and a short, direct answer at the top of each page.

03

Mark up Your Business as an Entity

Add complete LocalBusiness or Organization structured data with your name, address, phone, hours, logo and sameAs links to your profiles, and keep it consistent everywhere.

04

Build Independent Confirmation

Claim and link the profiles assistants cross-check, keep your Google Business Profile complete, and, when your business meets Wikidata’s notability guidelines, create a Wikidata entry backed by independent sources.

By industry

What AI Readiness Looks Like in Your Industry

The checks are the same for every business, but the gaps that matter most differ by industry. These are the patterns we see most often when we run the checker for Florida businesses.

Legal

Law Firms

People ask assistants to compare attorneys by practice area and city. Firms that list each practice area on its own page, mark up attorneys with credentials and keep consistent profiles on legal directories are much easier to identify. See legal SEO.

Healthcare

Medical and Dental Practices

Health questions are held to a higher standard of trust, so credentialed authors, clear provider information and accurate, specific business types such as Dentist or MedicalClinic matter more than usual. See healthcare SEO and dental SEO.

Local services

Home and Local Services

For roofers, HVAC companies and other local trades, the gaps are usually a thin Google Business Profile link, no service-area pages and no reviews shown on the site. Assistants lean on directories and reviews to choose who to name. See local SEO.

Online stores

E-Commerce and SaaS

Product and software questions reward clear comparison content, FAQ answers and pages that render without JavaScript. Blocked crawlers on a CDN are a common, silent problem for stores. See e-commerce SEO.

Compared with other checkers

How This Differs from AI Visibility Trackers

Several platforms now sell AI visibility tracking: they send a set of prompts to assistants on a schedule and report how often each brand is mentioned, which sources are cited and whether mentions are positive. That is useful for measuring outcomes, and it is what our Organic and AI Search Optimization Audit does by hand for your market.

This checker answers a different, earlier question: what is stopping you from being mentioned? Mention tracking can tell you that a competitor appears more often; it rarely tells you that the reason is a blocked crawler, a missing entity record or a homepage that only renders with JavaScript. Readiness checks find those causes.

The two work best together. Run this checker to fix the foundations, use the brand audit to see how your readiness and Brand Strength compare with competitors, and measure the results in AI answers once the foundations are in place.

Honest limits

What the AI Search Readiness Checker Does not Measure

Free tools should be clear about what they cannot see.

  • AI mentions, citations and sentiment. The checker does not send prompts to AI assistants, so it does not report whether or how you are named in their answers today.
  • Firewall blocks in the main scan. The readiness check reads robots.txt; the AI Crawler Checker also tests your firewall and CDN by requesting your homepage as each crawler.
  • Every page of your site. The scan reads your homepage, robots.txt, sitemap and a sample of inner pages, not the whole site.
  • Off-site content. Reviews, forum discussions and press coverage influence assistants, but the free check only sees them indirectly through links and references.

Each result lists its data sources and a confidence level. The full methodology is on the Signal Score page.

FAQ

AI Search Readiness Questions

What is an AI search readiness checker?

An AI search readiness checker tests whether AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews can reach, read and identify your business. SEOMA’s free checker measures AI crawler access, Wikidata and Wikipedia presence, answer-ready content, profiles and structured data, scores your AI readiness out of 100 and shows the fix for every failed check.

Is AI search readiness the same as AI visibility?

No. Readiness measures whether anything is stopping AI assistants from finding and trusting your business. Visibility measures how often you are actually mentioned or cited in their answers. The free checker measures readiness; SEOMA’s Organic and AI Search Optimization Audit tests real prompts to measure visibility.

How do I make my business show up in ChatGPT?

Allow OpenAI’s search crawler (OAI-SearchBot) to reach your site, describe your services clearly in plain text with direct answers, add complete business structured data, and build independent confirmation through profiles, reviews and references. Then test real prompts and earn mentions on the sources ChatGPT cites for your category.

Does blocking GPTBot remove me from ChatGPT?

Not by itself. OpenAI documents GPTBot as its training crawler and OAI-SearchBot as the crawler used for ChatGPT search results, so you can block GPTBot and still allow OAI-SearchBot. Our AI Crawler Checker shows the setting for each crawler.

What is a good AI readiness score?

Above 80 means the foundations are in place; between 50 and 80 usually means a few important gaps, often schema depth, profiles or FAQ content; below 50 usually means something fundamental, such as blocked crawlers or no entity data. Compare your score with competitors using the free brand audit.

Do I need llms.txt?

It helps a little and costs little. llms.txt is a proposed standard for summarizing a site for language models, and support is still emerging, so it carries a small weight in the score. Crawler access, entity data and clear content matter far more.

Is the AI search readiness checker free?

Yes. It is free and instant and needs no email address. You can optionally request the full report and a strategist’s plan by email.
