What it is

One Number for Organic and AI Search Visibility

Most SEO scores grade a single page against a checklist. A page can pass every item and still be invisible, because the thing that decides whether Google ranks you or ChatGPT cites you is mostly off the page: who links to you, whether real people visit, whether search engines and knowledge bases recognize your brand as an entity. The SEOMA Signal Score measures both halves, how authoritative your site is and how ready it is to be found, and combines them into one number you can track over time.

We built it because our clients kept asking the same question in two forms: why don’t we rank on Google? and why doesn’t ChatGPT mention us? The answers overlap far more than most agencies admit. Search engines and large language models both lean on the same signals: links from trusted sites, consistent entity data, crawlable and fast pages, and content that answers questions directly. The Signal Score checks those signals in one pass and shows the result in plain language.

It is not a ranking report. It does not know where you rank for a given keyword or how many visitors you get. Those depend on paid tools and on access to your analytics, and they belong in a full SEO audit. What it does tell you, quickly and for free, is whether the foundations that rankings and AI citations depend on are in place.

How it is calculated

Authority and Readiness, Weighted the Way Search Works

The score has two halves. Authority is how much the wider web already trusts your domain. Readiness is how well your site is built to be crawled, understood and cited. Readiness only counts in full once authority reaches 40, so a perfect site that nobody links to cannot score highly. Ahrefs’ Domain Rating and similar metrics behave the same way.

ComponentWeightWhat it measures
Authority Index50%Link authority, referring domains, real-user reach, traffic rank, archive history, Wikipedia and Wikidata presence, domain age
Organic readiness30% of readinessIndexability, titles and descriptions, headings, internal links, sitemaps, canonical tags, content depth
AI readiness25% of readinessQuestion-led headings, direct answers, FAQ markup, llms.txt, AI crawler access, citable facts and sources
Entity readiness20% of readinessOrganization and LocalBusiness schema, consistent name, address and phone, sameAs profiles, knowledge-graph signals
Technical readiness25% of readinessHTTPS, security headers, real-user Core Web Vitals, mobile rendering, broken pages, redirects

The full formula is Signal Score = 50% × Authority + 50% × Readiness × (0.4 + 0.6 × min(1, Authority ÷ 40)). Readiness is a weighted geometric mean of the four pillars, so one very weak pillar pulls the score down more than a simple average would. Critical failures cap the total: a site that blocks search engines, has no HTTPS or returns errors on a large share of its pages cannot score above a fixed ceiling, however good the rest looks.

Authority Index

Real Data Sources, not a Guess

Authority is the hardest thing to fake and the most important thing to measure honestly. Every authority check uses a public, independent data source. If a source is unavailable, that check is skipped and left out of the average. It is never filled in with an estimate.

SignalWeightSource
Link authority30Open PageRank, computed on the Common Crawl link graph
Referring domains10Open PageRank: unique websites linking to you, on a logarithmic curve
Real-user reach15Google Chrome UX Report: whether enough real Chrome users visit your site for Google to publish data on it

Archive history10Days captured by the Internet Archive in the last 12 months
Wikipedia references10Links to your domain from Wikipedia articles
Knowledge graph5A Wikidata entity listing your site as its official website
Domain age5Registration date from RDAP, the successor to WHOIS

This is why a new local business and a national brand score very differently even when their homepages look equally polished. In our test cases, a small site with no link data scores in the mid-teens, a small site with modest links and real Chrome traffic scores in the high forties to high fifties, and a major brand scores in the eighties. The score is designed to separate those cases, not to make everyone feel good.

Bands

What Your Score Means

Bands are assigned once all four readiness pillars and the Authority Index have been measured. If something could not be measured, the result is shown as preliminary instead.

0–39

Invisible

Search engines and AI assistants have little reason to surface you. Usually a mix of low authority and missing foundations: schema, crawlable pages, clear answers.

40–69

Emerging

The foundations are partly in place and you appear for some searches. The gap is usually authority: links, mentions and entity signals that build trust.

70–89

Competitive

You can win rankings and AI citations in your market. The work now is depth and consistency: more cited content, more trusted references.

90–100

Chosen

Sites search engines and AI assistants actively choose to show and cite. Very few domains reach this band, and it takes years of earned authority.

How to use it

From Score to Plan in Four Steps

The score is a starting point. Here is how we recommend using it.

01

Score Your Own Domain

Enter your domain above. The scan crawls a sample of your pages, checks your structured data and queries the authority sources. Most scans finish in under a minute.

02

Fix the Failed Checks First

Each failed check comes with the fix and the reason it matters. Technical and entity fixes such as schema, sitemaps, headings and security headers are often quick wins you can make yourself.

03

Score Your Competitors

Run the two or three sites that outrank you. The difference in Authority Index usually explains most of the ranking gap, and the pillar scores show where they are better prepared for AI search.

04

Re-Score Every Month

Authority moves slowly, readiness moves fast. Track both. If readiness is high and authority is flat, the next investment is links, mentions and digital PR, not more on-page tweaks.

Honest limits

What the Signal Score Does not Measure

A score you can take seriously has to be clear about what it leaves out. Every result lists these limits along with a confidence level: high when both the link graph and Chrome real-user data were measured, medium when one was, and low when only public proxies were available.

  • Keyword rankings and organic traffic: these need Search Console access or a paid rank tracker
  • Live AI answer citations: whether ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity cite you today for a specific question
  • Google Business Profile reviews, rating and map-pack position
  • Individual backlinks and their quality: the score uses aggregate link-graph data, not a backlink audit

Those are exactly the things a GEO audit and an SEO audit cover. If your score raises questions, that is the natural next step.

SEO and AI search

Why One Score Covers Both Google and AI Assistants

AI search engines do not start from nothing. Google’s AI Overviews are built on Google’s index. ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Copilot retrieve live web results and then decide which sources to cite. In every case, a page has to be crawlable, indexable and trusted before it can be quoted. That is why our AI search optimization (GEO) services start from the same technical and authority foundations as our SEO services.

What changes is the last mile. AI assistants favour pages that answer a question directly in the first sentence, back up claims with sources, use question-shaped headings and describe the business consistently across the web. The AI readiness and Entity pillars of the Signal Score measure exactly those things, so you can see whether you are ready for answer engine optimization or still need to fix the basics.

For local businesses, the same logic applies to the map pack and to assistants answering “best near me” questions. Consistent name, address and phone details, LocalBusiness schema and a strong Google Business Profile carry a lot of weight. Our local SEO services focus there.

FAQ

Signal Score Questions

What is the SEOMA Signal Score?

The SEOMA Signal Score is a free 0–100 measure of how visible a website is likely to be in Google and in AI assistants such as ChatGPT. It combines an Authority Index, built from real link-graph, Chrome user and traffic data, with four readiness pillars: organic, AI, entity and technical.

Is the Signal Score free?

Yes. The score is free and instant, and you do not need to enter an email address. You can optionally request a detailed improvement plan by email.

How accurate is the Signal Score?

Authority uses independent public data: Open PageRank on the Common Crawl link graph, Google’s Chrome UX Report, the Tranco list, the Internet Archive, Wikipedia and Wikidata. Each result shows a confidence level and the sources used. Checks that could not be measured are skipped rather than estimated.

Why is my score low when my website looks good?

Half of the score is authority: how much the wider web links to and visits your site. A well-built new site with few links will score low until it earns that authority. Readiness only counts in full once authority reaches 40.

How is the Signal Score different from Domain Authority or Domain Rating?

Domain Authority and Domain Rating measure links only. The Signal Score also measures real-user reach, knowledge-graph presence and how ready your pages are for organic and AI search, and it explains each check.

How can I improve my Signal Score?

Fix the failed readiness checks first, as they are usually quick. Then build authority through links, digital PR, consistent business listings and content other sites want to cite. SEOMA’s SEO and GEO services do both.
