The four pillars
What the Signal Score Measures
Your score combines four pillars. Each reflects a different reason search engines and AI systems do, or do not, choose your brand.
01
Organic Search
Rankings, SERP features and traffic potential on Google and Bing for the keywords that bring you revenue. Strong organic visibility is also the foundation of AI visibility, since Google says AI Overviews draw on the same SEO best practices.
02
AI Citations
How often ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Grok and Google AI Overviews name or cite your brand when buyers ask questions in your category, and how accurately they describe you.
03
Entity and Schema
Whether AI recognizes you as a clear entity: structured data such as Organization and LocalBusiness markup, consistent business information, Google Business Profile and profiles that link together.
04
Technical and E-E-A-T
Core Web Vitals, crawlability, indexation, author credentials, reviews and authoritative links: the trust signals described in Google’s quality rater guidelines that both search and AI rely on.
Score bands
What Your Score Means
Scores fall into four bands. Each band suggests a different priority.
| Band | Score | What it usually means | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| Invisible | 0–39 | Search engines and AI systems struggle to find or trust you | Fix technical and entity foundations first |
| Emerging | 40–69 | You are found for some searches but rarely cited or recommended | Build content depth and authority |
| Competitive | 70–89 | You compete for priority searches and appear in some AI answers | Close citation gaps against specific competitors |
| Chosen | 90–100 | Engines consistently rank, cite and recommend you | Protect and extend your lead |

Why one score
Why Combine Organic and AI Search into One Number?
Most reports split SEO and AI visibility into separate dashboards, so nobody sees the whole picture. But they are not separate problems. AI engines retrieve from the web, lean on the same quality and trust signals as search, and increasingly sit between your buyers and your website. Pew Research Center found that when a Google AI summary appears, people click a traditional result about half as often as when it does not.
One score makes the trade-offs visible. A business with strong rankings but weak entity signals may rank well and still be missing from AI recommendations. A business with good content but technical problems may never be crawled often enough to be cited. The Signal Score shows which pillar is holding you back, so you know where effort will pay off first.
It is also a baseline you can track. Re-running your score after changes shows whether visibility is improving, alongside the metrics we report in measuring GEO.
Our commitment
Real Scores, Never Invented Ones
A score is only useful if it is honest. That is why:
- Every number in your Signal Score comes from something we actually measured.
- When a pillar needs data we cannot collect instantly, we say so and include it in your strategist’s follow-up instead of guessing.
- We explain the specific checks behind each pillar, so you can verify them yourself.
- We never inflate or deflate a score to sell a service.
If you want the most detailed view of AI visibility, the GEO audit benchmarks your brand across AI engines question by question.
After your score
What to Do with Your Signal Score
Depending on which pillar is weakest, these are the most common next steps.
Weak Organic Search
Start with an SEO audit or a Keyword & SERP Map to find the searches worth winning.
Weak AI Citations
Benchmark AI engines with a GEO audit, then build citable content and authority.
Weak Entity and Schema
Fix structured data, business information and profiles so machines recognize your brand.
Weak Technical and E-E-A-T
Fix speed, crawlability and trust signals with a fixed-scope sprint.
Example
Example: Reading a Signal Score
Imagine a regional law firm with a score of 58, in the Emerging band. The breakdown shows strong technical health, decent organic rankings for its firm name and a few practice areas, weak entity signals because its business information differs across directories and its website has no Organization markup, and almost no AI citations for questions like “best estate planning attorney in Vero Beach”.
The priority is clear. Fixing entity data and adding structured data is fast and inexpensive. Publishing clear, sourced answers to the questions clients ask, with named attorney authors, builds the content AI engines can cite. Earning coverage in local and legal publications builds authority. Re-running the score in a few months shows whether the weakest pillars are improving.
Every business’s breakdown is different, which is why the follow-up from a strategist matters as much as the number itself.
Who it is for
Who Should Check Their Signal Score
The Signal Score is useful for:
- Business owners who want a quick, honest read on their online visibility.
- Marketing leaders preparing a case for SEO or GEO investment.
- Agencies and consultants looking for a second opinion on a client’s visibility.
- Businesses comparing their visibility with specific competitors.
- Anyone who has heard about AI search and wants to know where they stand.
Example questions
The Kinds of Questions Behind the AI Citations Pillar
AI visibility is measured with questions real buyers ask. For example:
| Question type | Example |
|---|---|
| Category | Best managed IT providers for small law firms |
| Local | Pediatric dentist near Vero Beach |
| Problem | How do I recover from a Google core update? |
| Comparison | [Your brand] vs. [competitor] |
| Brand | What does [your brand] do? |
Compared with other metrics
How the Signal Score Compares with Familiar SEO Metrics
| Metric | What it measures | What it misses |
|---|---|---|
| Domain authority scores | Link-based strength estimate | Content, entity, technical and AI visibility |
| Keyword rankings | Positions for chosen keywords | AI answers and entity recognition |
| Organic traffic | Clicks from search | Visibility that never produces a click |
| Signal Score | Organic, AI citations, entity and technical signals together | Detailed fixes, which your strategist follow-up covers |
How the score is calculated
How the Pillars Combine into One Score
Each pillar is scored from 0 to 100 based on specific, documented checks, such as whether structured data is present and valid, whether the site loads over HTTPS and responds quickly, or whether AI engines name the brand for a defined question set. The overall Signal Score is the average of the pillars that were measured.
When a pillar has not been measured yet, it is shown as pending rather than estimated, and the score clearly states how many pillars it is based on. A score band (Invisible to Chosen) is only assigned once all four pillars are measured, so a partial result is never presented as a final verdict.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Signal Score?
A free 0–100 score for how visible your domain is across organic and AI search: Google, Bing, AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Grok. It combines four pillars: organic search, AI citations, entity and schema, and technical and E-E-A-T.
Is the Signal Score really free?
Yes. Enter your domain; no email, credit card or commitment is required.
How accurate is the score?
Every number comes from something we measured. Where a pillar needs data we cannot collect instantly, we tell you and cover it in your strategist’s follow-up rather than estimating.
How is it different from a GEO or SEO audit?
The Signal Score is a fast, high-level read. The SEO audit and GEO audit go much deeper, with detailed findings and a prioritized roadmap.
Can I check a competitor’s score?
You can enter any public domain. Comparing your score with competitors is a useful way to see where you are ahead or behind.
How often should I check my score?
Every few months, or after major changes such as a redesign, migration or new content program, to track progress.
What happens after I get my score?
A strategist follows up within 24 hours with the details behind your score and the fixes most likely to improve it. There is no obligation.
Does the score cover Bing and Microsoft Copilot?
Organic search includes Google and Bing. AI citation checks focus on the major engines buyers use, and we can include Microsoft Copilot in deeper audits.
Will entering my domain affect my website?
No. The checks only read publicly available pages, like any search engine crawler would.
Can I share my score with my team?
Yes. Your strategist’s follow-up explains the score in plain language so you can share it with colleagues or decision-makers.
Is the Signal Score the same as SIGNAL by SEOMA?
Yes. SIGNAL is SEOMA’s visibility intelligence, and the Signal Score is the free score it produces for any domain.
Can agencies use the Signal Score?
Yes. Agencies often use it as a quick, independent read on a prospect’s or client’s organic and AI visibility.
What should I do if my score is low?
Look at which pillar is weakest. Technical and entity issues are often the fastest to fix; content and authority take longer. Your strategist’s follow-up recommends where to start.
Why does my score differ from other SEO tools?
Most tools measure one thing, such as links or rankings. The Signal Score combines organic, AI citation, entity and technical signals, so it will often differ from single-metric scores.
Do you store my domain or results?
We use your domain to prepare your score and follow-up. We do not sell or share it.
Can I get the Signal Score for multiple domains?
Yes. Enter each domain separately. For portfolios of sites, a strategist can prepare a combined view.
How long does the Signal Score take?
The measurable checks run in seconds. A strategist’s follow-up with the full picture and fix list arrives within 24 hours.
