How AI Overviews work

What Google Says About Appearing in AI Overviews

Google introduced AI Overviews broadly in the United States in 2024 (see Google’s announcement) and has since expanded them and added AI Mode. An AI Overview is a generated summary that appears at the top of some results pages, with links to the sources it draws on. Google has said that links included in AI Overviews get more clicks than if the page had appeared as a traditional listing for that query.

Google’s documentation on AI features and your website is unusually direct: there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimizations are necessary. A page has to be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet. The SEO best practices that already apply to Search (crawlable pages, helpful content, good page experience and structured data that matches visible content) still apply.

That means AI Overview optimization is not a trick. It is doing the fundamentals unusually well for the questions that trigger AI Overviews in your market, and making your content the clearest, most credible answer available.

Google’s Baseline for AI Features

  • Pages must be indexed
  • Pages must be eligible for a snippet
  • Allow crawling in robots.txt
  • Keep important content in text form
  • Good page experience
  • Structured data that matches visible content

Why it matters

AI Overviews Change Who Gets the Click

When an AI Overview appears, fewer people scroll to the classic results. Pew Research Center’s 2025 analysis of browsing data found that users clicked a traditional search result in 8% of visits to pages with an AI summary, compared with 15% on pages without one, and clicked a link inside the summary in about 1% of visits. Pew also found AI summaries on 18% of the searches in its sample.

So the opportunity is concentrated. Being one of the cited sources puts your brand inside the answer itself, in front of the people who read the summary and never scroll. Being absent means competing for a shrinking share of clicks below it.

Which queries show AI Overviews varies by industry and intent, and it changes over time. We track AI Overview presence for your priority queries, which you can read more about in our analysis of how AI Overviews surged across nine industries.

Strengthening the Trust Signals Behind Every Citation

Experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness are the qualities Google’s raters are asked to assess. Here is how we strengthen each one.

SignalWhat it meansHow we strengthen it
ExperienceFirst-hand, practical knowledgeCase studies, real examples, original photos and lessons from client work
ExpertiseDeep, accurate subject knowledgeCredentialed authors, reviewed-by notes and comprehensive, accurate content
AuthoritativenessRecognition as a go-to sourceCitations, mentions and features in respected industry publications

Google is clear that trust is the most important of the four. For YMYL topics in health, finance and law, we build in expert and compliance review. Read E-E-A-T in the AI answer era for more.

Our process

How an AI Overview Engagement Works

We start with evidence: which of your target queries show AI Overviews, and who is cited.

01

AI Overview Landscape

We identify priority queries that trigger AI Overviews in your market and record the sources currently cited for each.

02

Source Gap Analysis

For each query we compare your best page with the cited sources: answer clarity, depth, evidence, format, authority and technical eligibility.

03

Content and Structure

We improve or create the answer page for each query, with direct answers, supporting detail, sources and appropriate structured data.

04

Authority Building

We earn mentions and links from publications that matter in your industry and strengthen author and organization signals.

05

Track and Expand

We monitor citations and AI Overview presence, refresh pages that lose ground and expand into new question clusters.

Beyond Google

The Same Work Helps You Get Cited Across AI Search

AI Overviews are one answer engine among several. The signals that earn Google’s citations also help elsewhere:

  • ChatGPT search retrieves pages from the web; crawler access via OpenAI’s search bot and clear, quotable content matter.
  • Perplexity cites sources prominently and uses its own crawler, documented by Perplexity.
  • Gemini and Claude draw on brand and entity information across the web, so consistent profiles and authoritative mentions help.
  • Microsoft Copilot builds on Bing, so Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow support faster discovery.

Our full GEO services cover every major engine, and the GEO audit benchmarks them all.

Why pages are not cited

Common Reasons Strong Pages Are Left Out of AI Overviews

When we compare a client’s page with the sources Google’s AI Overview cites, these gaps come up most often:

  • The answer is buried. The page addresses the question, but only after several paragraphs of introduction. Cited sources usually answer in the first sentence of the relevant section.
  • The page covers too little. AI Overviews often synthesize several subtopics. Pages that cover the question and its natural follow-ups are more likely to be useful.
  • No evidence. Claims without numbers, examples or sources are harder to rely on than specific, attributed statements.
  • Weak expertise signals. Anonymous content on health, finance or legal topics competes poorly with pages written or reviewed by credentialed experts.
  • Snippet restrictions. A nosnippet directive or very restrictive max-snippet setting can prevent a page from being used in features that rely on snippets.
  • Indexing or rendering issues. If key content loads only through client-side JavaScript, or the page is not indexed, it cannot be considered.

Each of these is fixable. The GEO audit identifies which apply to your priority pages.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Google AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of some Google results pages, with links to the sources they draw on. AI Mode is a related, more conversational experience. Both are built on Google’s core search systems.

How do I get my content into AI Overviews?

Google says there are no special requirements: pages must be indexed and eligible for a snippet, and SEO best practices apply. In practice, the most-cited pages answer the question clearly and early, cover the topic thoroughly, show real expertise and come from trusted, well-structured sites.

Do AI Overviews reduce website traffic?

They can reduce clicks to classic results. Pew Research Center found people clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared versus 15% without one. Being cited inside the overview helps offset that.

Does structured data help with AI Overviews?

Google does not require special schema for AI features, but it recommends structured data that matches visible content as a general best practice, and it uses structured data to understand pages.

Can I opt out of AI Overviews?

Google’s documentation explains controls such as nosnippet and related directives that limit how content appears in Search features, including AI features. Using them can also limit regular snippets, so we weigh the trade-off with you.

How do you track AI Overview citations?

We monitor a defined set of priority queries for AI Overview presence and the sources cited, and track related traffic and conversions in Search Console and GA4.

Is this different from GEO?

AI Overview optimization is a focused part of GEO. GEO covers all AI engines, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude.

How quickly can a page start appearing in AI Overviews?

It depends on the query and competition. Improvements to an already-indexed, well-ranking page can show up relatively quickly once Google recrawls it; building authority on a new topic takes longer.

Do AI Overviews cite the top-ranking page?

Often, but not always. AI Overviews can cite pages from beyond the first few organic positions when they answer a specific part of the question well, which is an opportunity for strong, focused pages.

Do AI Overviews appear for every query?

No. They appear for a subset of searches, varying by topic, intent and region, and Google adjusts them over time. Pew found them on 18% of the searches in its 2025 sample.

Should we create separate pages just for AI Overviews?

Usually not. The best approach is improving the page that should already answer the question: clearer answers, better coverage, stronger evidence and expertise. Separate thin pages risk duplication.

Is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?

AI Mode is a more conversational, follow-up friendly experience in Google Search, while AI Overviews appear within regular results. Google’s guidance for both is the same: indexed, snippet-eligible pages following SEO best practices.

Do local businesses appear in AI Overviews?

They can, especially for informational questions about a service. For “near me” searches the local pack and Google Business Profile still play a major role, so local SEO remains essential.
